SCIENCE MISSION DIRECTORATE PROCESS OVERVIEW

You can request computing allocations of NASA High-End Computing (HEC) resources if you are currently funded by the Science Mission Directorate (SMD).

You may also submit a request for HEC resources as part of the proposal review process when seeking SMD funding.

The HEC Program has resources in two locations: the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) facility, and the NASA Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS). Information on all available HEC resources, including computing systems, storage and support services, can be found on Systems & Services At A Glance.

Please refer to the guidance below for how and when to submit requests, or direct questions to support@hec.nasa.gov.

SUBMIT A NEW REQUEST FOR HEC RESOURCES

Overview

SMD is now capturing computing requirements when projects are first considered for funding to improve resource management and planning. Select the relevant funding mechanism listed below for guidance on requesting HEC resources as part of the review process for your project.

ROSES 2017

If you are responding to a Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences 2017 (ROSES-17) solicitation and your project requires use of HEC resources:

  1. Submit a request in HEC eBooks
    1. Justification for how the HEC resources will support your work.
    2. Preferred location (NAS/NCCS).
  2. Upload a PDF of your request to NSPIRES / Grants.gov for selection review
    1. The HEC eBooks system will generate a PDF of your computing request. Upload the PDF to NSPIRES / Grants.gov as an attachment to your proposal.
    2. On the ROSES-17 cover sheet, check the “Yes” box indicating that a request to use HEC resources is included, and enter the HEC Request Number (found on the PDF).
    3. The review panel will consider your computing request and availability of resources in its review of your proposal. HEC resources will be awarded based on the resource phasing plan confirmed during this selection process.
  3. Once approved, submit detailed requirements in HEC eBooks
    1. Principal Investigators (PIs) must submit detailed requirements in the HEC eBooks system to finalize allocation of HEC resources. There are additional instructions in eBooks.

See ROSES-17 Summary of Solicitation Section I(d) for more details.

ROSES 2016

If you are responding to a Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences 2016 (ROSES-16) solicitation and your project requires use of HEC resources:

  1. Download and complete the HEC Request Template
    1. Justification for how the HEC resources will support your work.
    2. Preferred location (NAS or NCCS).
    3. Computing time and data storage requirements for each year of the proposed award period (the resource phasing plan). Note: Proposers should use SBU Conversion Factors when calculating computing time requirements.
  2. Upload a PDF of your request to NSPIRES / Grants.gov for selection review
    1. Convert the template into a PDF and upload it to NSPIRES / Grants.gov as an attachment to your proposal.
    2. Check the “Yes” box on the ROSES-16 cover sheet indicating that a request to use HEC resources is included.

See ROSES-16 Summary of Solicitation Section I(d) for more details.

All Other Funding Sources

If you are seeking funding for work outside of competed Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) solicitations and your project requires use of HEC resources:

  1. Submit a request in HEC eBooks
    1. Justification for how the HEC resources will support your work.
    2. Preferred location (NAS or NCCS).
    3. Computing time and data storage requirements for each year of the proposed award period (the resource phasing plan). Note: Request computing time in Standard Billing Units (SBUs). The HEC eBooks system provides a calculator to convert processor (CPU) hours to SBUs.
    4. SMD will consider your computing request and availability of resources in its review of your proposal. HEC resources will be awarded based on the resource phasing plan confirmed during this review process.
  2. Once approved, submit detailed requirements in HEC eBooks
    1. Principal Investigators (PIs) must submit detailed requirements in the HEC eBooks system to finalize allocation of HEC resources. There are additional instructions in eBooks.

AUGMENT AN ACTIVE AWARD FOR HEC RESOURCES

Overview

SMD has shifted from annual to multi-year awards for HEC resources covering the full period of performance. If there are no changes to your project’s computing requirements, allocations will be automatically renewed according to the amount awarded for each year of your project. Otherwise, SMD provides opportunities twice a year to submit augmentation requests for additional HEC resources (up to 20% of your current award).

Augmentation Requests

Submission Deadline for Augmentation Allocations
20 February 1 April
20 August 1 October

If you have an SMD-funded project and you need to request an augmentation to your current or future year allocations:

  1. Submit a request to augment your award in HEC eBooks
    1. Update your computing resource requirements for any year of your award. There are additional instructions in eBooks.
    2. Requests will be considered based on availability of resources and prior usage. Augmentations allocated on 1 April will expire on 30 September to remain synchronized with the annual cycle for all SMD projects (1 October through 30 September). No direct funding will be provided through an award of computing time.

NOTE: If your SMD project received HEC allocations prior to implementation of this policy, the HEC eBooks system will automatically prompt you to complete a one-time entry of your project’s future year requirements.
