GETTING ACCOUNTS

Before you can get accounts on NASA High-End Computing systems, you either need to be a NASA-sponsored Principal Investigator (PI) or have a PI sponsor you. All NASA Mission Directorates follow the General Process for Getting Accounts (below).

General Process for Getting Accounts

The computing time award letter (the time between request and award varies by supporting organization) grants the PI an approved computational project with a unique group identification number (GID). Use this GID to get accounts on our computing systems. Please be aware that foreign national users have an extended process.

Note: The NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Facility and the NASA Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS) currently have separate processes for getting accounts. For special cases, contact the NAS and NCCS Support staff via information listed in the table below.

Process for Getting Accounts
  NAS NCCS
General Process

1. Complete and submit a NAS Account Request Form

For both new and returning users and PIs, please go to the online NAS Account Request System and follow the instructions.

2. Complete NASA’s mandatory Annual Information Security Awareness Training

Note that returning users must also complete this training, as it is an annual requirement.

Within one week of completing the security training, you will receive an RSA SecurID fob via the U.S. Postal Service or Federal Express. The fob is required for two-factor authentication login to NAS supercomputers.

3. Activate Your SecureID Fob

Once you have received your fob, contact the NAS Control Room at (800) 331-8737, (650) 604-4444, support@nas.nasa.gov to get it activated and obtain instructions on how to log in to the systems. Instructions are also mailed with the fobs and can also be found online; see RSA SecurID Fobs.

1. Complete and submit an NCCS User Administration Request Form

Follow the Instructions for Requesting an NCCS Userid.

2. Return your completed User Administration Request Form to the NCCS

Forms signed by you (the user) and your principal investigator (PI) may be:

a. Returned by mail to

  NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
  NASA Center for Climate Simulation
  User Services Group
  Mailstop 606.2
  Greenbelt, MD 20771 USA
or
b. Faxed to 301-286-1634
or
c. Scanned and attached to an email to support@nccs.nasa.gov

Caveats, Prerequisites, Disclaimers

Access to NCCS computing resources requires a NASA Identity. Before returning your ARD:

  • If you are a NASA employee or contractor, have a NASA Identity established by your NASA Center organization.
  • If you are not associated with a NASA Center organization and do not already have a NASA Identity, the NCCS will request one for you.

NASA requires basic information technology (IT) security awareness training prior to NCCS access and annually thereafter through SATERN:

  • If you already have SATERN access, complete this training before returning your ARD.
  • If you do not have SATERN access, you will receive instructions when the NCCS confirms that your NASA Identity has been established.

NCCS access also requires an Agency RSA SecurID token for two-factor authentication. If you do not already have a token, the NCCS will request one for you after confirming that you have completed the basic IT security awareness training through SATERN.
